Submission Instructions For Works
If your work has already been published you MUST submit two physical copies to the Copyright Office. After payment, we will provide you with the necessary documentation to include with your package.
Below are complete instructions to follow after payment.
Step 1) Wait for Shipping Slip.
We notify you via email that the application has been submitted to the Copyright Office. After submission, you will receive a shipping slip to include in your package to the Copyright Office.
Step 2) Download and Print Shipping Slip
Go to "My Account". Under "Completed Orders", there will be a download link for the shipping slip. Download and Print the shipping slip. Include the shipping slip in your package to the Copyright Office.
Step 3) Send Two (2) Copies to the Copyright Office.
Include the shipping label along with two (2) copies of your work.
Step 4) Await Copyright Office Confirmation.
The Copyright Office will contact you directly to confirm receipt and will notify you if there are any problems with the copy of the work you submitted.
Some frequently asked questions about physical work submission
What if my work is too large?
If the physical work is too large to send (such as a sculpture), then you can take a photograph of your work and send two (2) copies of the photograph to the Copyright Office. You can also upload a digital photo in step 2. Please indicate that your work is too large in your work notes or in the special handling instructions.
What if my work is published, but there is no/ never was a physical copy?
If a physical copy does not exist, please choose "digital" in the Best Known Format field and upload the digital file of your work. In the special handling instructions, please indicate that there is no physical copy of the work.
What if I don't have two (2) copies of my work?
If you do not have two (2) copies of the work, you can take a photograph of your work and send two (2) copies of the photograph to the Copyright Office. You can also upload a digital photo in step 2. Please indicate that you do not have two (2) physical copies of your work in the work notes or in the special handling instructions.
Instructions for Submission of Unpublished Works
If your work has not been published, and a digital file exists, we strongly encourage you submit to digital files with the form. Digital file submissions have fast registrations times with the copyright office. They also save you a trip to the post office.
What if my work is unpublished and I only have a physical copy
If your work is unpublished and you only have a physical copy of your work, you can take a photograph of your work and send two (2) copies of the photograph to the Copyright Office. You can also upload a digital photo in step 2. Please indicate that you do not have a digital copy of your work in the work notes or in the special handling instructions.What if my file is larger than 5 MB?
